Tartan (B ID BI)
Size: B Medium
Form: ID Informal Decorative
Color: BI Bi-Color
Growers Notes
Color: Deep red petals look almost black and have white markings that vary from bloom to bloom. I’ve seen pictures where some people’s stock looks like it throws blooms that are more heavy in white petals streaked with darker red. Ours has always been the opposite, with an occasional mostly red bloom.
Growth habit: Usually stands 5’ tall, but in one patch it grew to over 6’. Strong stems seem to float above the foliage, inviting you to snip every single flower. It’s a well behaved plant with large floppy leaves, but easy to keep clean.
Blooming habit: 6-8” Flower heads can be cut in early stages of bloom and allowed to open up off the plant. It’s one that really makes a statement in a bouquet!
Features: Tartan is in Jake’s top 3 list of favorite dahlias that we grow. Almost every family member and friend who have walked through our fields become mesmerized by it. While I do cut from it, I really enjoy seeing the blooms on the plants in the field. Garden tip—I do prefer having at least 3 planted together for the best visual impact.
